Express vocational guidance «Reference point»

Users of psychological toolkit of «IMATON» Ltd. know that until recently the enterprise produced two computer vocational guidance systems: «Choice» and «Pro». In 2004 these systems were changed to the program which was named «Reference point». What was the reason for creation of a new professional product?

System «Choice» represented the computer program working under operational system MS DOS which first version has been written in 1993, and last fifth version — in 1998. The program was based on the «Multifactor detector of professional disposition» developed in the Leningrad scientific research institute of vocational training on the basis of well-known classification of professions developed by E. A. Klimov. The technique has been designed, mainly, for revealing professional interests of young people. Having answered three blocks of questions, it was possible to receive data about most interesting type of professions, as well as the list of the professions most corresponding to interests and preferred working conditions. The technique «Multifactor detector of professional disposition» became widespread, mainly, due to the computer program «Choice». Hundreds experts in centers of employment, centers of vocational guidance, centers of psychological help to young family and schools till now use it for vocational guidance consultations and classes. However the existing software does not meet any more the requirements of modern computers and operational systems. In particular, operational system Windows XP issued in 2001 has no built-in support of Russian in DOS mode that creates a number of inconveniences for inexperienced users. Moreover, the technique «Multifactor detector of professional disposition» is out-of-date already. Therefore experts of «IMATON» have made the decision to refuse from manufacturing and realization of system «Choice» and to replace it with more up-to-date vocational guidance program.

Other system — «Pro» — represented the computer program written under Windows in 1994 on the basis of translated from English vocational guidance expert system «KUDOS». Due to more perfect user interface, convenience of work, opportunity of use not only for young, but also for adult people, as well as the built-in help system with descriptions of professions the program «Pro» became even more widespread among experts on vocational guidance, than system «Choice». Long time «Pro» was considered as the standard of quality of computer vocational guidance programs. However now it is characterized by a number of defects, in particular, a mistake at installation under Windows XP, discrepancy of the list of professions to requirements of a modern Russian labour market, insufficiently detailed description of professions, impossibility of their editing and updating. Thus, in spite of persisting demand, the decision was made to stop manufacturing of this program and to replace it with more perfect vocational guidance system.

What could form a methodical basis for development of new computer vocational guidance program? Unfortunately, Klimov differential-diagnostic questionnaire, Golomshtok card of interests and a professional readiness questionnaire, meanwhile the most known and popular among occupational consultants, are suitable only for schoolchildren and are characterized by absence of any information on psychometric qualities. Golland questionnaire of a professional orientation of person, the Myers-Briggs types indicator (MBTI) and simplified variant of MBTI — Keirsy questionnaire — are insufficiently adapted concerning lists of the professions in demand on a contemporary Russian labour market. Yovashi questionnaire is based on classification of professions little-known among the Russian experts. Besides all these techniques already have, at least, several computer realizations. Therefore at creation of the new computer program the choice has been made for the benefit of a new Russian technique of the express vocational guidance developed by I. L. Solomin in 1994.

The technique of express vocational guidance is designed for diagnostics of professional dispositions and notion about professional abilities of youth and adult people. Besides it serves for informing on various professions. The technique is developed for rendering assistance to young people and adults in a choice of a direction of professional career according to their dispositions, abilities and needs of a contemporary Russian labour market. The technique is focused on work of psychologists, occupational consultants and teachers in conditions of schools, psychological-pedagogical and medical-social centers, centers of vocational guidance, institutions of vocational training and employment services, it is characterized by ten years’ experience of practical use, can serve as the base tool in vocational guidance work and successfully supplements various methods of individual consultation and group classes. The technique is simple in use, does not demand special psychological knowledge and can be used both by experts and clients without assistance. The technique of express vocational guidance does not replace methods of profound psychological diagnostics of professional abilities and if necessary can be supplemented with others vocational guidance methods.

From the very beginning the blank variant of a technique was developed to increase intensity and quality of occupational consultation of a plenty of clients in conditions of mass actions, such as city and regional fairs of vacancies, open doors days, etc. Experience of use of this technique in such conditions proves that the number of clients to which occupational consultant can render elementary vocational guidance services connected to diagnostics and informing, makes up to several tens a day per one expert. Furthermore, the technique has shown the efficiency in conditions of carrying out of group classes and individual consultations in the centers of employment, centers of vocational guidance, institutions of general and vocational training. Inclusion of a technique in the popular books devoted to occupational choice, has shown, that the majority of readers are able to use it for self-diagnostics of the professional interests and acquaintance to corresponding professions. As against the majority of traditional vocational guidance techniques the technique of express vocational guidance:

  • direct toward the professions that are in great demand on a contemporary Russian labour market,
  • suitable for vocational guidance of various categories of the population, both youth and adult people,
  • has a strict scientific substantiation and meets the criteria set to qualitative psychometric tools.

The material of a technique includes the «Orientation» questionnaire and a map of professions. The «Orientation» questionnaire allows to define quickly and simply within 10—15 minutes professional interests and dispositions of the client, as well as his notion on the professional abilities. In turn, the map of professions enables to inform him on various kinds of professions, the requirements made by them to the person, about demand for professions, as well as to choose the specific profession corresponding to interests and abilities of the client in view of opportunities of the further employment.

What does the new computer program «Reference point», automating a technique of express vocational guidance, represent? The program allows:

  • To test the client,
  • To look through results of testing as tables, texts of the conclusions, lists and descriptions of professions,
  • To save results of testing in a file in MS Excel format for the subsequent record on a disk, transfer on a network, insertion in other documents or printing,
  • To look through and edit lists and descriptions of professions (the program includes the most full base of occupations descriptions in Russian for today, accessible to independent editing and updating),
  • To work with various databases, to create and to choose them, to change names, to delete, to transfer in MS Excel spreadsheet for the subsequent analysis and processing,
  • To work with records of databases, to edit the data about tested persons, to delete them, to carry out search and sorting, to copy, to cut and insert with the purpose of transfer from one database into another,
  • To differentiate access to the program with the help of the password, to give full access to the program with the right of the administrator and to enable to pass testing, to get acquainted with the results and to see descriptions of professions to any person without the rights of the administrator.
